th anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks, the General Motors Foundation and Chevrolet today donated $250,000 to the Travis Manion Foundation to help grow participation around the country in the 9/11 Heroes Run.
The 9/11 Heroes Run will bring communities together in more than 25 U.S. cities to honor military, police, firefighters and first responders who have given their lives to protect and save others. Proceeds from the 5K races will go to the families of fallen heroes.
The Manion family formed the foundation in 2007 after Marine 1st Lt. Travis Manion was killed by sniper fire while defending against an enemy ambush during a patrol mission in Fallujah, Iraq. In an unusual move, the Iraqis named their operating base Combat Outpost Manion, one of few Iraqi facilities named for an American service member.
Before leaving for his last tour, Manion visited Rescue One in New York City, the First Responder unit that lost more than half its members helping others following the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.
“After a day of sharing their experiences with Travis, he came home even more inspired to serve our country,” said his mother Janet Manion. “He gave his father a Rescue One hat that read ‘Never Forget’ and asked that his father wear it while he was gone. That’s why we started the 9/11 Heroes Run four years ago… to honor and remember.”
In addition to the 9/11 Heroes Run, the foundation operates the Character Does Matter Leadership Program, programs to Honor the Fallen, and funds Good Grief seminars, scholarships and community service projects that benefit U.S. veterans and families of the fallen.
“We hold our nation’s military personnel and their families in the highest regard, and it’s our honor to support the families of our fallen heroes,” said GM Chairman and CEO Dan Akerson. “I’m personally honored to know the Manion family and to be associated with such a worthwhile endeavor in Travis’ name and memory.”
Manion, whose father was also a Marine, excelled in the classroom and as an athlete at the Naval Academy, winning several leadership awards and being a nationally ranked wrestler. He was also awarded the Silver Star and the Bronze Star with Valor for his actions in Iraq. Manion Hall at the Basic School in Quantico, Va., is named after Travis and stands as a reminder to future generations of Marine officers of his leadership on and off the battlefield.
Chevrolet is the official pace vehicle of the 9/11 Heroes Run, the brand’s latest support for military families. Chevrolet’s longstanding commitment includes the GM Military Discount program which provided more than 70,000 discounts in 2010 to military personnel and their families with a cumulative value of more than $60 million.

Not long after Travis was killed by enemy sniper fire in Iraq, checks in his memory began appearing at the Manion’s home. In lieu of flowers, checks from all over the country and the world soon amounted to more than $100,000 and Tom and Janet vowed to give every penny to worthy causes. The year following Travis’ death, the newly formed Travis Manion Foundation presented $180,000 in scholarships, $85,000 to Fellowships for wounded and disabled veterans through The Mission Continues, and more than $45,000 for Good Grief seminars to help families of the fallen. DETROIT – Chevrolet confirmed today it will add a diesel variant to the Cruze lineup in North America in calendar year 2013. Diesel versions of the Cruze are currently being sold in Europe. Additional details on the Cruze diesel for North American markets will be released at a later date.
The diesel will bolster the already fuel-efficient Cruze lineup. Cruze Eco with a standard six-speed manual transmission, is the most fuel-efficient gas-powered/non-hybrid vehicle in America, with an EPA-rated 42 mpg on the highway.
Cruze recorded a total of 24,896 sales in the United States in June, the fifth consecutive month sales have exceeded 20,000. The success of the Cruze has increased Chevrolet’s total share of the compact-car segment from 9.5 percent a year ago to 11.9 percent for the first five months of 2011, even as the segment size grew 19 percent.

DETROIT – Chevrolet will be the sole automotive sponsor of Major League Baseball for the next five years, continuing its affiliation with America’s Pastime. The agreement was announced today before the 82nd annual All-Star Game in Phoenix.
The multi-year agreement maintains Chevrolet’s exclusive category rights, and Chevrolet will remain the presenting sponsor of three of baseball’s most prestigious awards, the Roberto Clemente Award – given annually to the MLB player who combines a dedication to giving back to the community with outstanding skills on the baseball field – as well as the Ted Williams All-Star Game Most Valuable Player Award and the World Series Most Valuable Player Award.
"I can remember when 'Baseball, Apple Pie, and Chevrolet' was the jingle for Chevy advertisements in the 1970s," said Kevin Mayer, director of advertising and promotions for Chevrolet, "but Chevrolet and baseball have shared a place in American culture for most of the past 100 years.”
Chevrolet is celebrating its centennial this year.
Chevrolet is continuing its commitment to helping grow the sport of baseball through communities across the country. 14 percent growth fueled by successful new models, including the Chevrolet Cruze
DETROIT – Chevrolet sold 2.35 million vehicles globally in the first six months of 2011, the best half-year performance in Chevrolet’s 100-year history.
“Founded in the United States by a Swiss émigré, Chevrolet was created with a global focus,” said Joel Ewanick, GM global chief marketing officer. “One hundred years later, Louis Chevrolet’s roots continue to shape our company, and enable Chevrolet to offer great products and service to customers in more than 120 countries around the world. We will continue to work at bringing new customers to the Chevy family – no matter where they live.”
Chevrolet sold 286,499 more vehicles in the first half of 2011 than the same time period of 2010, a 14-percent increase year over year. In addition, Chevrolet set record first-half sales in many countries, including Argentina, Brazil, Chile, China, Colombia, Denmark, Ecuador, France, South Africa, and Turkey.
For the first half of 2011, Chevrolet recorded sales gains in all of its top five markets, including:
■The United States, where sales are up 16 percent following nine consecutive months of year-over-year sales increases.
■Brazil, where sales are up 0.4 percent over the best-ever-sales pace set in 2010
■China, where sales climbed 15 percent to set the brand’s best first-half results ever
■Russia, where sales were up 54 percent as the brand continues to be the best-selling global brand in the country
■Canada, where sales climbed 8 percent, and have more than doubled the pace of industry growth for the past 18 months
The potential for Chevrolet’s continued growth is demonstrated in the emerging markets of Brazil, Russia and China. Chevrolet’s combined sales strength in the “BRIC” countries, including India, is unmatched.
Much of Chevrolet’s global growth can be attributed to the wave of new models, such as the Chevrolet Cruze compact car, Spark mini car, all-new Aveo/Sonic small car, and Orlando MPV. They will soon be joined globally by the all-new Chevrolet Malibu midsize car, and the all-new Colorado compact pickup, which will go on sale later this year.
Chevrolet sold more than 330,000 Cruzes worldwide during the first half of 2011, a 132-percent increase over the same time period a year ago. Much of that growth came in China and the United States, where Cruze was the best-selling passenger car in the country in June. Since introduction in early 2009, Cruze has sold more than 800,000 units worldwide and is on track to exceed 1 million before the end of 2012.
“The success of the Cruze illustrates what is possible when you listen to your customers,” said Mary Barra, senior vice president, GM Global Product Development. “By offering drivers more than they expected in a compact car, the Cruze has redefined the global segment and is on track to bring a million new customers to Chevrolet. We are applying that same customer-focused approach to all of our global introductions, including Orlando, Colorado, Malibu, Spark, and Aveo/Sonic.”
Chevrolet sold more than 220,000 Spark minicars worldwide since it was introduced in December 2009. That includes more than 100,000 Sparks sold during the first half of 2011 – a 110 percent gain over a year ago – driven primarily by consumer demand in South Korea, Mexico, and Uzbekistan.
Chevrolet sold more than 150,000 Aveo compact cars in the first half of 2011, including the all-new Aveo, which will be called the Sonic in some markets. Introduced in South Korea in March, the new Aveo/Sonic is currently on sale in nearly 30 countries.

The Volt will be the first electric car used by the New York City Police Department, which also uses electric scooters and golf cars. The Volts represent the majority of 70 new electric vehicles joining the city fleet, which now has 430 electric vehicles.
"This is the latest and largest-ever addition of electric vehicles to the City’s fleet, which is already the largest municipal clean-air vehicle fleet in the nation,” Bloomberg said in a press statement. “We will continue to lead by example, but we also must provide New Yorkers with tools to make environmentally friendly choices in their own lives.
“When provided with the facts, people become far more likely to choose an electric vehicle. Our job is to ensure the public has the facts, ensure they can make their own decisions and ensure that if they want to drive an electric vehicle, we are providing the infrastructure needed. It’s all part of our PlaNYC agenda to create a greener, greater New York City.”

DETROIT – Like many Americans, Kory Levoy’s weekly routine included shelling out $50 to $60 a week to fill his Audi TT Roadster. In the six months he has owned his Chevrolet Volt, Levoy has driven approximately 7,500 miles and has filled up only three times.
“I was tired of spending roughly $200 plus a month on gas,” said Levoy, a manufacturing manager from Yorba Linda, Calif. “The ability to not even consider finding a gas station or worry about fuel pricing is a phenomenal experience.”
Like many other Volt owners, Levoy is averaging 40 miles on a single charge of electricity, more range than he needs for his daily commute of 25 miles each way to work.
“At night I charge my Volt at home using my 240-volt home charging station, and am then able to use my 120-volt portable vehicle charge cord to charge during work, meaning I rarely need to use gas,” said Levoy.
Levoy estimates his average electric bill to charge his Volt is about $25 a month, or less than a dollar a day. Even with paying for more electricity, Levoy could save close to $2,000 a year in gasoline.
Levoy is not alone in seeing real savings from owning a Volt. Carey Bailey, an electrical engineer from Cottage Grove, Ore., used to spend about $500 a month in gasoline for his 75-mile roundtrip commute. Since purchasing his Volt in January, Bailey he has cut that to about $100 a month and expects it to drop further. He estimates it costs roughly $1.10 a day to charge his Volt.
“Each day, I use about a quarter of a gallon of gas to get to work, which is hardly anything," said Bailey. “Being able to charge at work is an added benefit and I love the fact that I am reducing my carbon footprint by not consuming as much gas.”
The Volt’s extended-range capability offers a total driving range of up to 379 miles, based on EPA estimates. For the first 35 miles, the Volt can drive gas- and tailpipe emissions-free using a full charge of electricity stored in its 16-kWh lithium-ion battery. When the Volt’s battery runs low, a gas-powered engine/generator seamlessly operates to extend the driving range another 344 miles on a full tank.
“About two-thirds of the more than 2 million miles driven by Volt owners to date have been powered by domestically produced electricity," said Cristi Landy, Volt marketing director. “We are hearing from owners like Kory and Carey who are able to charge both at home overnight and at work during the day. These owners are able to maximize driving on electricity alone, seeing real saving at the pump and in their wallets.”

Georgia and Iowa among early customers of new police patrol vehicle
DETROIT – Forsyth County, Ga. Sheriff Ted Paxton saw the 2011 Chevrolet Caprice Police Patrol Vehicle (PPV) at several events last year and was impressed enough to be among early law enforcement customers. The PPVs began patrol in Cumming, Ga. in May.
“With its emphasis on the ergonomically designed seats for officer comfort, and enhanced safety features, the Caprice is a vehicle that is made for police work,” said Paxton. “We’ve had our vehicles for a month, and we’re sold. This will be a worthwhile investment.”
After the vehicles’ first month on patrol, the sheriff’s office plans to replace its current fleet of approximately 175 other patrol vehicles with Caprice PPVs.
Paxton has company. Dennis Hogan, Fleet Services manager in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, also pulled the trigger.
“We view the police vehicle as an extended office for our officers,” Hogan said. “We chose the Caprice, because it delivers optimal officer operational space, trunk and storage space, and generally provides our officers the most-suitable operating environment.”
Equipped with segment-leading interior volume (112 cubic feet / 3,172 liters) and specially designed front seats sculpted to allow space for gun belts, the rear-wheel-drive Caprice PPV provides officers the comfort they need during their long hours in their mobile office.
Police agencies across the country told Chevrolet they need a powerful rear-wheel-drive vehicle that offers performance, safety and comfort.
“The Chevrolet Caprice PPV is our response to what our nation’s police officers said they needed to safely and effectively perform their jobs,” said Brian Small, general manager, GM Fleet and Commercial Operations. “In the design process of this vehicle, we polled many of our customers to gain insight. Thus far, the results seem to speak for themselves and prove that customer feedback is critical to meet and exceed expectations.”
Armed with a powerful 6.0L V-8 engine, 355 horsepower and 384 lb-ft torque, Caprice PPV has best-in-class top speed and zero-to-60 acceleration (sub six seconds). The vehicle also offers a segment exclusive front-seat-only head curtain air bag, which allows for installation of a full-width prisoner partition. Additionally, StabiliTrak, GM’s electronic stability control technology, provides a “police performance” mode for enhanced stability during high-speed driving to help ensure the safety of the PPV occupants.
