Iconic Corvette Began 60 Years Ago

  • First Corvettes rolled off the assembly line on June 30, 1953
  • Since then, more than 1.5 million Corvettes have been produced

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Chevrolet today marked its 60th anniversary of the Corvette, an iconic American sports car. The first Corvette went into production in Flint, Mich. on June 30, 1953. Since then, Corvette has become an American icon that continues to offer the best in today’s technology and performance.

“During the past six decades, the Corvette has been woven into the fabric of American culture, as the sports car of choice for movie stars, musicians and astronauts,” said Chris Perry, vice president, Chevrolet Marketing. “The very best Corvettes represent the state-of-the-art for their eras in terms of design, technology and performance.”

Here are some key facts highlighting 60 years of Corvette history:

  • ·         Corvette is the world’s longest-running, continuously produced passenger car. The longest-running vehicle of any type is the Chevrolet Suburban.
  • ·         Corvette made its debut as a concept vehicle at the General Motors Autorama in New York City on Jan. 17, 1953. It was such a success that a limited run of 300 production Corvettes began on June 30 of that year.
  • ·         All 1953 models were Polo White with a red interior and they were priced at $3,498. In 2006, the third 1953 Corvette produced sold for a record $1.06 million at auction.
  • ·         Corvette was exclusively available with an inline six-cylinder engine until 1955. That year, the optional V-8 engine was ordered by 90 percent of buyers. The six-cylinder was dropped in 1956. Corvette has been available exclusively with V-8 power since.
  • ·         Corvette was produced only as a convertible for its first 10 years. The fixed-roof 1963 “split-window” Corvette Sting Ray coupe launched the second-generation Corvette.  Sales doubled and it became a year-round car for drivers in colder climates.
  • ·         Approximately 1.56 million Corvettes have been produced since June 30, 1953. The 500,000th Corvette was built in 1977; the 1 millionth was built in 1992, and the 1.5 millionth Corvette rolled off the line in 2009.
  • ·         Corvettes have been produced at three facilities: Flint, Mich. (1953); St. Louis, Mo., (1954-1981); and Bowling Green, Ky. (1981-2014). The change from St. Louis to Bowling Green happened during the production year. The first 1981 Corvette was built in St. Louis, and the last 1981 Corvette was built in Bowling Green.
  • ·         No 1983 Corvettes were sold to the public. The model year was skipped in preparation for the all-new 1984 Corvette, which launched the C4 generation. Forty-four Corvette prototypes were built as 1983 models. Only one remains, and it is on display at the National Corvette Museum, in Bowling Green, Ky.

Corvette Stingray: 3.8 seconds from 0 to 60 mph

Turns in 2:51.8 lap at Virginia International Raceway ‘Grand Course’

The 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray, equipped with the available Z51 Performance Package, is capable of accelerating from 0 to 60 mph in 3.8 seconds, braking from 60 to 0 in 107 feet, and sustaining 1.03 g in cornering.

DETROIT Chevrolet released official performance estimates today for the 2014 Corvette Stingray, the most capable standard Corvette ever. Equipped with the available Z51 Performance Package, the new Stingray is capable of accelerating from 0 to 60 mph in 3.8 seconds, braking from 60 to 0 in 107 feet, and sustaining 1.03 g in cornering.

Cumulatively, the acceleration, cornering and braking capability of the Corvette Stingray enabled it to lap the Virginia International Raceway’s (VIR) 4.2-mile “Grand Course” in 2:51.78.

“For the new Stingray, we set out to elevate every aspect of the Corvette’s performance,” said Tadge Juechter, Corvette chief engineer. “Considered alone, the acceleration, braking and cornering performance of the Corvette Stingray is truly impressive. More significant is how well they work together, resulting in a lap time at VIR that places the new Stingray in the upper echelon of all sports cars.”

The lap around VIR was conducted in Stingray equipped with the available Z51 Performance Package and Magnetic Ride Control. The vehicle that conducted the lap was modified only with safety features like a racing seat and harness, and fire extinguisher system.

“The new Stingray constantly communicates feedback to the driver, which makes you feel incredibly confident behind the wheel,” said Jim Mero, Corvette vehicle dynamics engineer. “That confidence encourages you to attack each corner because the Stingray drives so well: the tire grip is incredible; the steering response is some of the best I’ve ever experienced; the Magnetic Ride dampers allow little body roll through the corner, while still soaking up the rumble strips when you clip the apex,” he said. “It’s just addictive on the track.”

The 2014 Corvette Stingray coupe goes on sale in the third quarter of 2013 for a suggested starting retail price of $51,995, excluding tax, title, and license fees. The $2,800 Z51 Performance Package includes an electronic limited-slip differential; dry-sump oiling system; integral brake, differential and transmission cooling; as well as a unique aero package that further improves high-speed stability. Magnetic Ride Control with Performance Traction Management is a $1,795 option. A Corvette Stingray equipped like the test car used at VIR would cost $56,590.

GM to Make Door Unlock, Remote Start Standard

Broadened key fob-based RemoteLink Mobile App services good for five years

DETROIT – Remotely unlocking doors, activating horn and lights and remote start for factory-equipped vehicles are among services General Motors will make standard via smartphone for five years through the OnStar RemoteLink Mobile App.

GM announced the new RemoteLink Key Fob Services program on Wednesday for OnStar-equipped 2014 Chevrolet, Buick, GMC and Cadillac models – even if the owner declines to pay for other OnStar services. It is the broadest deployment of remote services offered through a mobile app by any auto manufacturer. Thirty-six 2014 model year GM vehicles are compatible with the RemoteLink mobile app.

“We know our customers value remote services,” said Mary Chan, president GM Global Connected Consumer. “GM owners request remote door unlock assistance through OnStar more than 60,000 times each month, so it makes sense for us to offer RemoteLink Key Fob Services to enable customers to lock, unlock or start their vehicle from anywhere they have a wireless or cellular connection.”

Remote start is the most popular remote service by current users of the RemoteLink Mobile App.

The complete set of RemoteLink Mobile App services remain available with a trial or paid OnStar subscription. Additional services include monitoring the status of the vehicle’s operating systems, including remaining oil life, fuel level range in miles, tire pressure, and miles per gallon. It also includes a one-touch connection to an OnStar Advisor for a simple request or emergency need. RemoteLink Mobile App users with the Directions and Connections plan can also send Turn-by-Turn directions directly from their smartphone to their vehicle.

Once a customer takes delivery of an eligible 2014 GM vehicle, he or she can simply download the free application to a compatible smartphone and agree to terms. The five-year period runs from the vehicle delivery date.

“Our vehicles are getting more connected, and so are we. As mobile devices become a bigger part of our lives, GM understands the importance of providing our customers the ability to use these devices as part of their vehicle experience,” said Chan.

“What’s great about the RemoteLink Key Fob Services is that it works far beyond the range of a traditional key fob, which can come in handy in a number of situations,” such as starting your car on a cold day as you leave the office or ensuring your vehicle is safely locked in the airport parking lot as you sit in the terminal.

“Customers expect the connection to their vehicle to be available anywhere they go and anytime they want to use it,” said Alan Batey, GM vice president, U.S. sales and service. “RemoteLink Key Fob Services represent simple, smart connectivity and another example of how our brands are evolving services and connecting with our customers.”

GM introduced the auto industry’s first mobile app when it launched RemoteLink for the Chevrolet Volt in 2010 using OnStar technology. Today, the RemoteLink Mobile App, which is available for nearly all GM brands, has been downloaded more than 1.5 million times with more than 320,000 regular users.

The full suite of OnStar in-vehicle services includes 24/7 access to a live Advisor, Automatic Crash Response, Stolen Vehicle Assistance, Hands-Free Calling, Vehicle Diagnostics, Turn-by-Turn Navigation (with the Directions and Connections package) and more.

General Motors Co. (NYSE:GM, TSX: GMM) and its partners produce vehicles in 30 countries, and the company has leadership positions in the world's largest and fastest-growing automotive markets.  GM, its subsidiaries and joint venture entities sell vehicles under the Chevrolet, Cadillac, Baojun, Buick, GMC, Holden, Isuzu, Jiefang, Opel, Vauxhall and Wuling brands. GM Announces Maintenance Plan for 2014 Models

Customers who purchase or lease an eligible new 2014 Chevrolet, Buick, or GMC car, truck, or crossover in the U.S. will be covered by a new maintenance program that includes certain scheduled services for two years or 24,000 miles, whichever occurs first.

For most 2014 vehicles, Chevrolet, Buick, and GMC dealers will complete an oil and filter change, four-wheel tire rotation, and conduct a 27-point vehicle inspection based on what’s called for in the vehicle owner’s manual maintenance schedule and oil life monitoring system.

“This new plan will kick off our customers’ ownership experience on the right foot and keep our strong sales momentum going,” said Dan Akerson, General Motors chairman and CEO, who announced the plan at GM’s 2013 annual meeting of stockholders.

“We know that customers who service their vehicles at our dealerships are much more likely to purchase another GM product down the road,” Akerson said.  “It’s all the more important to bring customers to our service facilities for routine maintenance to further enhance the quality and reliability of their GM vehicles.”

Some alternative-fuel vehicles do not include oil changes, and some performance vehicles do not include tire rotations when that service is not recommended. The program covers up to four service visits in the 24-month period, and is fully transferrable to subsequent owners. Customers who have already purchased or leased a 2014 model year vehicle will receive the scheduled maintenance program.

Cadillac vehicles beginning with the 2011 model year are already covered by the Cadillac Premium Care Maintenance Program, which covers scheduled maintenance services including oil changes, tire rotation, most air filter replacements and an inspection for four years or 50,000 miles, whichever comes first.

GM Employees Donate $28,500 to Help Tornado Victims in Oklahoma

Plant, community initiatives still underway to support ‘Help 4 Oklahoma’ campaign

FLINT, Mich. – General Motors Co. employees around the country have so far raised approximately $28,500 to help people in tornado-ravaged Oklahoma.

General Motors Co. employees around the country have so far raised approximately $28,500 to help people in tornado-ravaged Oklahoma, adding to an earlier pledge of $50,000 from the GM Foundation to a group of organizations led by Forgotten Harvest.

In some instances, plant collections by GM and the UAW have been supplemented with donations from GM retirees, contract workers, dealers and suppliers, who pitched in to provide assistance to tornado victims in the Oklahoma City region, which was hit by a series of deadly twisters in a span of less than two weeks.

The donations will go to Detroit-based Forgotten Harvest’s “Help 4 Oklahoma” campaign, a partnership created by Forgotten Harvest, the General Motors Foundation, Chevrolet, Art Van, WDIV Local 4, WJR News/Talk 760, the Detroit Media Partnership, Garden Fresh Gourmet, Absopure and Great Lakes Wines & Spirits.

The GM Foundation joined the effort with the lead donation of $50,000. Chevrolet donated a 2013 Silverado full-size pickup to help with cleanup and restoration efforts.

“It’s important for us to be there to help our neighbors who are hurting and our support of the ‘Help 4 Oklahoma’ campaign is a great way to make a difference,” said Lori Wingerter, vice president, GM Foundation. “Through donations and key partnerships with organizations like Forgotten Harvest, we’re able to step up and help provide immediate relief when disaster strikes.”

GM employees donating to Forgotten Harvest, to date:
·         Flint Manufacturing:                            $8,700
·         Wentzville, Mo., assembly:                 $4,400
·         Lordstown, Ohio, complex:                 $4,200
·         Tonawanda, N.Y. engine:                   $4,100
·         Fairfax, Kan., assembly:                     $3,700
·         Bowling Green, Ky., assembly:          $2,500
·         Baltimore, Md., transmission:             $   800

GM employees elsewhere found other ways to help tornado victims. In Spring Hill, Tenn., GM employees and UAW members, along with suppliers and people in the community donated more than $12,000 in gift cards and filled three, 50-foot trailers with supplies, including soup, water, dog food, diapers and other necessities. In Fairfax, some assembly plant employees plan to travel to Oklahoma to assist with cleanup and rebuilding activities.

Additionally, GM employees also spent time raising funds to help victims of tornadoes that ripped through the Flint area last week. While no one was injured, more than 100 homes were damaged or destroyed and more than $2.5 million in damage occurred.

Flint-area GM plants have raised more than $1,400 for victims in Flint with additional fund-raisers planned.
