Chevrolet Silverado Chassis Cab Cleans Up with CNG

Bi-fuel Silverado 3500HD joins growing alternative fuel lineup

DETROIT – Chevrolet will expand its compressed natural gas lineup to include the bi-fuel 2016 Silverado 3500HD Chassis Cab, allowing drivers to operate the vehicle on CNG or gasoline. Bi-fuel will be available on the regular cab in both 2WD and 4WD drivetrains starting in the fourth quarter.

Silverado 3500HD has a proven reputation as the ultimate work truck for fleets, many of whom are looking to reduce emissions and save money at the pump.

Southern California Gas Co. has more than 5,000 units on the road and currently, 22 percent of its over-the-road fleet operates on natural gas. The utility has committed to make the majority of its over-the-road vehicles operate on CNG by 2020, and it is looking to the bi-fuel Silverado 3500HD Chassis Cab to help meet that goal.

“A chassis cab configuration is the bread and butter of our fleet and the vehicle we rely on to service customer homes,” said Tony Orta, Strategy & Maintenance manager at Southern California Gas. “The turnkey bi-fuel option offered by Chevrolet allows us to reduce our carbon footprint while giving us the fueling flexibility and range we need to keep drivers on the road servicing customers.”

Said Mike Schneider, vice president of operations support, Sempra utilities: “This truck is another step forward in supporting our goal to green our fleet.”

The 24.5 gallon CNG tank, located directly behind the cab, in addition to the 23.5 gallon gasoline tank on the Silverado 3500HD gives drivers fueling flexibility and optimal range between fill-ups.

“CNG burns cleaner and costs less at the pump than gasoline, making it an appealing option for fleets,” said Ed Peper, U.S. vice president, GM Fleet & Commercial. “Expanding our CNG lineup furthers our commitment to provide a diverse lineup of alternative fuel vehicles for our customers.”

All of the CNG fuel systems are warranted and validated by Chevrolet. For qualified commercial and government fleet customers, the five-year/100,000-mile (whichever comes first) powertrain limited warranty covers the CNG fuel system and its components. For all other customers, it is covered under Chevrolet Complete Care five-year/60,000-mile powertrain limited warranty. As part of Chevrolet Complete care, both fleet and retail customers also receive two years/24,000 miles (whichever comes first) of scheduled maintenance.

All major components associated with the CNG system also carry GM service part numbers and are available throughout the largest dealer network in the United States. That’s not the case with some other manufacturers’ bi-fuel trucks.

The Silverado 3500HD Chassis Cab joins the bi-fuel Silverado 2500HD and 3500HD and the dedicated CNG full-size Chevrolet Express and vans.

Founded in 1911 in Detroit, Chevrolet is now one of the world's largest car brands, doing business in more than 115 countries and selling around 4.8 million cars and trucks a year. Chevrolet provides customers with fuel-efficient vehicles that feature engaging performance, design that makes the heart beat, passive and active safety features and easy-to-use technology, all at a value. 2015 Chevy Colorado 4WD Z71 V-6: Off-Road

Chevy has a long history with the Z71 name, but in the last several decades it has languished and never quite lived up to its potential. The Z71 trim offers uniquely tuned front and rear springs, specially tuned shocks, unique wheels and tires, and some extra skid plating. But the suspension is at stock height. The package does offer GM's G80 rear limited-slip differential that can fully lock (after a good amount of spin) in certain low-traction situations. GM also included a hill descent control feature, but that's only offered with the four-wheel-drive version (the Z71 trim can be ordered on two-wheel-drive Colorados). The low-range gear is 2.72:1, and the crawl ratio (multiply 1st gear by ring-and-pinion gear by low-range gear) is 37.8:1.

What’s Next? GM Predicts Jobs of the Future

Top 10 jobs of the future that will drive exciting technologies

DETROIT – As smartphones get more sophisticated, watches connect us to the world and our homes grow more automated, cars will advance in ways customers cannot imagine. Already, people are developing and bringing products to the mainstream that we don’t even know we want.

What will be the jobs that bring the technology that improves our lives to market?

“In the automotive industry we have the opportunity to make our technologies impact real change,” said Gary Smyth, executive director, global research and development at General Motors. “Not many other industries can embrace the future so holistically: We have battery chemists, electrical engineers, manufacturing experts, software developers and social media operators all in one industry, working at making our lives easier and more productive.”

Ten years from now the workplace may depend less on location than connectivity, such as eco-friendly workstations that offer collaborative environments catering to technology developers.

GM employees of various experience levels and backgrounds see these as the Top 10 jobs of 2025.

1.    Electrical engineers – Battery, hybrid and plug-in vehicles are becoming mainstream. The internal combustion engine isn’t going anywhere soon, but the industry is developing alternative ways to make a car move. Electrified vehicles are more powerful and achieve greater range, and as more customers try these alternatives, demand can only be expected to grow. Over the next 10 years, more engineers will be needed to explore and develop electrified vehicles.

2.    Analytics expert – Data is everywhere and can help diagnose what in a car needs attention before it becomes a problem and help pick the best route to a destination. With smart data, the car and the driver will work together for a more efficient future. Analysts will be needed to create algorithms to decipher how this data can best help drivers.

3.    Interaction designers - Operating all the technology in the car needs to be designed with an artistry that makes it easy to use. A driver can be going 60 mph on the freeway and the information and technology within the car needs to be accessed intuitively so the driver can keep his hands on the wheel.

4.    Web programmer – The car is not a smartphone or a tablet or whatever is going to come next, but it will be a platform that allows the next big thing to easily connect to the vehicle and its occupants. Software is playing an increasingly important role in the vehicle, and coders and developers are only going to be in more demand.

5.    Autonomous driving engineer – GM envisions a world without crashes and a key step toward that direction is the introduction of vehicle-to-vehicle technology on the 2017 Cadillac CTS that allows the car to “talk” to other cars that are equipped with V2V technology. After that will come Super Cruise, a semi-autonomous driving technology in the Cadillac CT6 range-topping luxury sedan. Within these fields there will be sensor experts, radar developers and all types of engineers needed to make these vehicles and those that follow them a reality.

6.    Customer care experts – It’s not just about cars being made by car people who deliver them to the masses. With social media, direct interaction with companies big and small is direct and near instantaneous. Social care experts provide the listening ear and resolution to problems that can help make customers for life.

7.    Sustainability integration expert – Proof points of a sustainable business model can be seen throughout GM. Already, the company has 122 plants and facilities that send no garbage to landfills. A variety of other environmentally friendly programs – from using alternative energy sources like solar and wind – to just finding ways to use less of everything opens employment opportunities for people who understand the best ways to apply these goals to the business.

8.    Industrial engineer – Vehicles are mass-produced products. The best companies discover and apply the most efficient production techniques. The future for this position will challenge engineers to build complex vehicles in ways that are sustainable and efficient.

9.    3D Printing engineer – The uses and capabilities of 3D printing in the development, design and engineering world are just beginning to be fully realized. A part mockup that once took weeks to create can now be printed in a matter of hours. Faster prototyping doesn’t just save time; it can lead to more options to be tested and better end products.

10.     Alternative propulsion engineer – Diesels, battery electrics, fuel cells. There is no single answer to the future of propulsion. Refining and developing new ways for cars to move will also drive job creation.

General Motors Co. (NYSE:GM, TSX: GMM) and its partners produce vehicles in 30 countries, and the company has leadership positions in the world's largest and fastest-growing automotive markets. GM, its subsidiaries and joint venture entities sell vehicles under the Chevrolet, Cadillac, Baojun, Buick, GMC, Holden, Jiefang, Opel, Vauxhall and Wuling brands. Duramax Pull Starts 60,000 LB’s of Equipment No Problem!

Here is something you don’t get to see everyday. This isn’t some new, souped up truck in ideal conditions pulling a heavy load…. This is an old, beat up Chevy Farm Truck doing exactly what it was built to do at the Factory, many years after that Duramax Engine rolled off the line.

To pull start a 60,000 Pound Caterpillar scraper is one heavy load to haul. Not only that, he has to tow it up a slight incline back onto the road. Nice work getting it done with the truck you have, not the one in the magazines! Read more at: http://rollingcoal.net/video_posts/duramax-pull-starts-60000-lbs-of-equipment-no-problem/

Chevy Trucks have a Lock on Capability

‘G80’ locking rear differential makes the most
 of traction for slick surfaces

DETROIT – Trucks need traction to get the job done. And whether it is winter snow, spring mud or the weed-covered boat ramps of summer, an automatic locking rear axle can help keep Chevy trucks moving ahead with enhanced confidence and control.

Often referred to as the G80 for its order code, the rear axle locks automatically if one wheel starts to spin, enabling both rear wheels to propel the truck. The added traction lets a 2WD pickup to go places traditionally thought of as 4x4 territory, and further enhances the capability of 4x4 pickups.

“The G80 locking axle provides a greater traction advantage than limited-slip differentials in most situations, while its automatic engagement requires no driver involvement, unlike some competitors’ electronic lockers, which require driver activation,” said Jeff Luke, executive chief engineer. “The G80’s simplicity, durability and sure-footed grip have been proven with generations of customers, as it has been a staple of the Chevy truck lineup for more than 40 years.”

The G80 automatic locking rear axle is available on most Silverado models, and is standard on LTZ and Z71 versions of the Silverado 1500 and all Silverado 2500 and 3500 HDs. Additionally, it is available on Colorado WT and LT models, and standard on Colorado Z71. It is also standard on Tahoe and Suburban.

With technology by Eaton, the G80 performs as an open differential until excessive slip in one wheel automatically triggers the locking mechanism, ensuring the rear wheels turn at the same speed. It provides more sure-footed traction than a conventional limited-slip axle, which can allow the wheels to turn at different rates in a low-traction environment, limiting the amount of traction-enhancing torque that can be channeled to the faster-spinning wheel. Unlike electronic lockers, the G80 engages and disengages automatically, with no input from the driver.

When the G80 detects excessive wheel slip, a flyweight-type governor engages. A self-energized clutch system causes a cam plate to ramp against a side gear, compressing disc pack to cause both rear axle shafts/wheels to rotate at the same speed.

The lockup and disengagement processes happen instantly and are practically imperceptible to the driver. Ride is smoother because the G80 operates mostly as an open-type differential in normal driving conditions.

“There are no buttons to push or electronic settings to engage,” said Luke. “The G80 does its job instantly and quietly, so drivers can go about their job with confidence.”
