GM Invests $356 Million in Flint, Saginaw and Grand Rapids Engine/Component Operations

GM investment announcements
in U.S. facilities top $7 billion in 2015

FLINT, Mich. – General Motors will invest more than $356 million in a new engine line in Flint and driveline and powertrain components in Saginaw and Grand Rapids, creating more than 50 jobs and helping to retain nearly 500 positions.

The Michigan investment announcements come on the same day as an amended agreement between GM and the Michigan Strategic Fund under the Michigan Economic
Growth Authority (MEGA) tax credit program. As part of the amended agreement, which was approved by the Michigan Strategic Fund today, GM will invest $1 billion in Michigan by 2030. Today’s announced investment of $356.35 million represents more than one-third of that amount.

Since 2009, GM has made investment commitments in Michigan of more than $9 billion.  During this time period, GM has far exceeded its original investment commitment under the MEGA Agreement. GM’s substantial investment in Michigan and the corresponding job growth and retention has contributed Michigan’s economic success since 2009.

“The agreement with GM on MEGA credits helps Michigan’s budget forecast. And today’s announcement that it is investing in Saginaw, Flint and Grand Rapids proves the company wants to retain a strong presence in Michigan,” said Gov. Rick Snyder.

“The fact that GM is committing to invest $1 billion by 2030 here is even better news. It’s a globally competitive environment, and GM’s announcement shows it appreciates that Michigan is a Comeback State with a skilled work force and exciting expansion opportunities.”

Today’s announcement includes:
•    Flint Engine Operations: $263 million for a future engine program. The investment retains approximately 410 hourly and salaried jobs at the plant.
•    Saginaw Metal Casting Operations: $50 million for driveline components. The investment retains 68 jobs.
•    Grand Rapids Component Holdings: $43.35 million for powertrain components. The investment creates 55 and retains 15 jobs.

“These investments will better position GM and its work force to produce high quality engines and components for customers who demand greater fuel efficiency and performance from our vehicles,’ said Bill Shaw, GM North America Manufacturing Manager.

Details pertaining to the engine programs and associated vehicles will be released at a later date.

“The membership and leadership of Region 1-D are excited about this investment in our area and our work force,” said UAW Region 1-D Director Gerald Kariem. “These investments were earned with the quality and skill our membership brings to their jobs every day, and we appreciate GM giving us the opportunity to continue to prove the UAW work force is world class. Congratulations, GM and UAW Locals 659, 668 and 167.”

Today’s announcement raises GM’s announced U.S.-facility investment in 2015 to $7.1 billion, including $353.4 million announced recently in four other states:

•    Bedford, Ind.: $127.4 million for engine components
•    Bowling Green, Ky.: $44 million for increase engine capacity
•    D-Max/Moraine, Ohio: $82 million for productivity improvements
•    Defiance, Ohio: $100 million for engine components

GM and U.S. Army to Demonstrate Extreme Off-Road Hydrogen Fuel Cell Chevrolet Colorado

Agreement focused on proving unique utility
and viability of fuel cell propulsion

WARREN, Mich. – General Motors and the U.S. Army Tank Automotive Research, Development & Engineering Center (TARDEC) are modifying a Chevrolet Colorado midsize pickup truck to run on a commercial hydrogen fuel cell propulsion system and will expose the truck to the extremes of daily military use for 12 months.

“Hydrogen fuel cell technology is important to GM’s advanced propulsion portfolio, and this enables us to put our technology to the test in a vehicle that will face punishing military duty cycles,” said Charlie Freese, executive director of GM’s Global Fuel Cell Engineering activities.

Fuel cell propulsion has very high low-end torque capability useful in off-road environments. It also offers exportable electric power and quiet operation, attractive characteristics to both commercial and military use.
"The potential capabilities hydrogen fuel cell vehicles can bring to the Warfighter are extraordinary, and our engineers and scientists are excited about the opportunity to exercise the limits of this demonstrator," said TARDEC Director Paul Rogers.

"FCVs are very quiet vehicles, which scouts, special operators and other specialties place a premium,” he said. “What's more, fuel cells generate water as a by-product, something extremely valuable in austere environments."

GM and TARDEC have fuel cell development and research facilities located 20 minutes apart in Pontiac and Warren, Mich. The two collaborate to evaluate new fuel cell designs and materials, and TARDEC’s state-of-the-art facility enables it to test and integrate fuel cell systems it has been developing for more than a decade.

In 2007, GM launched “Project Driveway,” a 119-vehicle fleet of hydrogen fuel cell-equipped Chevrolet Equinoxes that were driven in daily use for more than 3 million miles by more than 5,000 consumers.
Hydrogen fuel cell propulsion technology helps address two major environmental challenges with automobiles today – petroleum use and carbon dioxide emissions. Fuel cell vehicles can operate on renewable hydrogen from sources like wind and biomass. Water vapor is the only emission.
Since the launch in 2014, the Chevrolet Colorado has raised the bar for midsize pickups with class-leading horsepower, torque, fuel economy, trailering capabilities and safety technologies. The Colorado provides true truck capabilities in a refined, fuel-efficient midsize package with three available powertrains. Paired with the available 2.8L Duramax diesel, the Colorado is the most fuel-efficient pickup truck in America. More information on the Chevrolet Colorado can be found at www.chevrolet.com/colorado.
Additional product details and specific vehicle timing will be announced later.

Chevrolet Supports Wreaths Across America

Vehicle fleet will help honor and teach
during journey to Arlington National Cemetery

DETROIT – Chevrolet will support Wreaths Across America next week as it honors America’s military heroes by helping the organization place more than 700,000 wreaths at military cemeteries across the country.

A fleet of Chevrolet vehicles provided to Wreaths Across America – including several decorated Silverados and Suburbans – will lead the Wreaths Across America journey from its Maine headquarters to Arlington National Cemetery in Washington, D.C., beginning Sunday through Dec. 12.
Along the route, Chevrolet employees, dealers and volunteers will donate more than 13,000 wreaths and help the organization accomplish its mission to remember, honor and teach during several stops at local schools and community centers.

"We think it is so important to teach our younger generation that our freedoms are not free, and that the stories of our fallen and departed heroes should not be lost through the years,” said Dan Adamcheck, Chevrolet regional sales and marketing manager. “Laying those wreaths and paying tribute is a small way to show how grateful we are.”

Wreaths Across America began when Maine businessman Morrill Worcester – inspired by the power of Arlington National Cemetery during a childhood visit – began placing wreaths there in 1992 with a small group of volunteers.

Today, his vision has become a national grassroots movement to remember America’s military heroes during the holidays. In 2008, Congress unanimously passed legislation to recognize Wreaths Across America Day each December, and memorials are held to honor veterans at historic military landmarks and statehouses in nearly all 50 states.

For more information, including local opportunities to volunteer, visit WreathsAcrossAmerica.org.

In addition to its support for Wreaths Across America, Chevrolet has expanded its military discount program – normally reserved for active-duty, reserves, retired personnel and veterans within a year of discharge – to include all 23 million veterans and their spouses. The discount is available through Jan. 4, 2016. To learn more, visit ChevySalutes.com.

Founded in 1911 in Detroit, Chevrolet is now one of the world's largest car brands, doing business in more than 115 countries and selling around 4.8 million cars and trucks a year. Chevrolet provides customers with fuel-efficient vehicles that feature engaging performance, design that makes the heart beat, passive and active safety features and easy-to-use technology, all at a value. New GM Wind Tunnel Accelerates Fuel-Saving Designs

Expanded testing capacity for quieter vehicles
and lower operating cost

WARREN, Mich. – General Motors is now able to accelerate and verify fuel-saving designs earlier in development of new cars and trucks thanks to a new reduced scale wind tunnel test facility on the campus of the company’s Technical Center.

GM’s new, 35,000-square-foot Reduced Scale Wind Tunnel aerodynamically tests clay models up to 40 percent of the scale of a vehicle. It is equipped with a conveyor-style rolling road system that simulates real-world highway driving conditions up to a top speed of 155 mph. Testing reduced-sized vehicles on a simulated road allows GM aerodynamic engineers to reduce wind drag in a  full-size vehicle design.

Advanced 3D printing machines create underbodies and engine blocks that are detailed and to scale for the reduced sized clay models. Working suspensions with spinning wheels allow aerodynamic engineers to better examine how airflow affects a vehicle’s underbody while in motion, resulting in quieter cars and trucks that can cost customers less to operate.

The new aerodynamic test facility is located next to GM’s full-scale wind tunnel that has been in operation since 1980. Together, the facilities give GM a competitive advantage in testing capacity and capabilities.
The original full-scale wind tunnel will be upgraded next year with its own full-scale rolling road system and other improvements.

“The combined capabilities of our new reduced-scale and full-scale wind tunnels allow us to reach industry-leading levels of aerodynamic refinement,” said Ken Morris, vice president, GM Global Product Integrity. “We view the new $30 million reduced scale wind tunnel as an investment towards a better, more energy-efficient future.”
