GM Student Corps Members Learn, Earn and Lead

129 high school students team up with GM retirees
and college students for summertime “leadership factory”

DETROIT – When high school students Sadeeque Mohamed and Tiera Wade joined the inaugural GM Student Corps in 2013 as paid interns, they never expected to return to GM and their alma maters to mentor the 2016 Student Corps members.

Wade, a Wayne State University student who graduated from River Rouge High School, credits the program for her decision to enter social work and launch a non-profit organization. Mohamed, a computer science major at University of Michigan Ann Arbor, is a Hamtramck High School graduate.
“Student Corps is a life-changing experience, which is why I joined again this year as a college intern,” Mohamed said. “I wanted to give back to Hamtramck and the program, which helped me immensely. I also wanted to help mentor high school students from my community and provide students with guidance and support.”

As a high schooler with an entrepreneurial spirit, Mohamed opened his own computer and phone repair company with the money he earned during his GM Student Corps internship.

“Student Corps was not a typical internship or job. It was truly a leadership factory,” said Mohamed. “It taught me to be a business-minded person. I was earning good money that helped me and my family, and was able to successfully manage my business until I started my freshman year of college.”

Since 2013, more than 500 high school students have earned a paycheck while learning real-world work skills and giving back to their communities via the GM Student Corps. This year’s Student Corps includes 129 students from 13 high schools in metro Detroit, Flint and Pontiac.
The program pairs teams of 10 high school interns with retired GM executives and college interns to plan and complete community service projects, primarily at neighborhood schools and parks.

This summer 60 GM retirees and 13 college interns are working with students to develop teamwork, leadership skills and a community service mindset. The teams work as small start-ups and manage all aspects of their restoration, repair and clean-up projects, from budgeting, planning and problem solving to execution.

Students also attend a financial planning seminar and engage in life skills sessions on topics such as decision making, relationship building and resume writing. They tour GM facilities and the University of Detroit Mercy for exposure to career and educational opportunities.
Participating high schools select students based on their leadership potential, dedication, determination and academics. The college interns come from University of Detroit Mercy, the University of Michigan Flint and Ann Arbor, and Wayne State University.

“Each summer, the students perform important and valuable work at schools and parks in their communities, but just as important are the lasting relationships between our retirees and students,” said Heidi Magyar, director of GM Community Outreach and Student Corps. “We’re thrilled to have Sadeeque and Tiera return to the program this summer to mentor our Student Corps members.”
The program runs through mid-August and concludes with a formal presentation to program champion Mark Reuss, executive vice president of GM Global Product Development, and his leadership team.

The 2016 GM Student Corps schools are Central Collegiate Academy, Detroit Public Schools Cody Campus, East Detroit High School, Flint Southwestern Academy, Hamtramck High School, Harper Woods High School, Henry Ford High School, Madison High School, Melvindale High School, Detroit Public Schools Osborn Campus, Pontiac High School, River Rouge High School and Van Dyke Lincoln High School.

Last summer, the GM Student Corps renovated 11 schools and eight parks, spreading nearly 1,000 yards of mulch, applying 246 gallons of paint, planting 700 flowers and trees, and laying 46 yards of stone.

Chevrolet Certified Service to Keep Classics on the Road During Dream Cruise

Six 2016 Chevrolet Silverados staffed by techs
will rescue drivers with car trouble

DETROIT – The Chevrolet Certified Service Rescue Squad will join thousands of classic car enthusiasts on Woodward Avenue on Saturday, August 20 to offer assistance to classic cruisers that stall, overheat or run out of gas.

ASE-certified technicians provided by Buff Whelan, Gordon, Les Stanford, Marty Feldman, John Bowman and Suburban Chevrolet will cruise Woodward in both directions in six 2016 Chevrolet Silverado Rescue Squad Pickup trucks.

Since the Chevrolet Certified Service Rescue Squad began participating in the Woodward Dream Cruise five years ago, it has serviced almost 200 vehicles of all makes and models. The technicians, who volunteer their time during the Dream Cruise, give classic car owners peace of mind in the event of a breakdown.

“The volunteers who manage our Chevrolet Certified Service Rescue Squad are above all else, fans of the Woodward Dream Cruise and the cars they service during the event,” said Chevrolet Certified Service Marketing Manager Scott Williams.

With more than 40,000 classic cars expected to participate in the Woodward Dream Cruise, the Chevrolet Certified Service Rescue Squad have this advice for cruisers before they hit the road with their classics:

  •     Battery – make sure the battery is charged, the terminals are clean and check for wear or aging of the alternator belt and distributor cap
  •     Fluids – check fluid levels to make sure the vehicle is ready to operate for several hours, and bring extra to top off when necessary; proper cooling system operation is essential in hot weather and stop-and-go traffic
  •     Gas – fill up the gas tank all the way before heading to Woodward; a sticky or faulty gas gauge can leave you stranded
  •     Tires – check the pressure and condition of all tires, especially if the vehicle is only driven a few times per year
  •     Wiper Blades – make sure the windshield wipers are in good operating condition

“Classic car lovers take great care of their vehicles, but unforeseen issues can crop up, especially given the long hours of the Dream Cruise,” said Williams. “The professional technicians from the Chevrolet Certified Service Rescue Squad look forward to keeping this year’s classics on the road, cruising.”

Chevrolet Presents Colorado Diesel Midnight Edition to All-Star Game MVP Eric Hosmer

SAN DIEGO – The 2016 Ted Williams All-Star Game Most Valuable Player, Eric Hosmer, chose a Chevrolet Colorado Diesel Midnight Edition during the MVP award ceremony presented by Chevrolet at Petco Park in San Diego on Tuesday night.

Chevrolet, America’s most awarded car company, gave Hosmer who went 2-for-3 in the contest with a home run, two runs batted in and a run scored, his choice between the 50th Anniversary Edition Camaro SS Convertible and a Colorado Diesel Midnight Edition.

This is Hosmer’s first All-Star MVP award and the first for a Kansas City Royal since Bo Jackson in 1989.

“Hosmer’s spectacular on-field performance tonight demonstrates to all baseball fans and especially our kids that hard work, determination and teamwork is what wins, and that is why Chevrolet is proud to present the MVP award,” said Brian Sweeney, U.S. vice president of Chevrolet.

Chevrolet has been the Official Vehicle of Major League Baseball® since 2005 and through its

Chevrolet Youth Baseball program has helped raise more than $28 million to aid hometown teams over the last 10 years. Nearly 5.2 million young people in communities across the country have benefitted from the program, and more than 1,500 Chevrolet dealers are involved.

Additionally, through Chevrolet Youth Baseball, more than 90,000 equipment kits have been donated to teams around the country, nearly 11,000 parks have been renovated and more than 111,000 children received complimentary instruction on baseball fundamentals.

“At Chevrolet, we appreciate the power of play and the positive effect that it has on our kids,” said Sweeney. “That positive effect on our kids and ultimately on our communities is why it is so important to us and our Chevrolet dealers to support baseball at every level.”
During the afternoon’s Red Carpet Parade, Hosmer, along with his All-Star Game teammates from both the American and National Leagues, signed a 50th Anniversary Edition Camaro hood that will be auctioned in the coming days on MLB.com. The proceeds of that auction will support the MLB-MLBPA Youth Development Foundation.

The Colorado Diesel Midnight Edition that Hosmer chose begins as a black Z71 Colorado Diesel and adds an all-black front end with body-colored grille, bumper, badging, black 17-inch wheels and aggressive Goodyear DuraTrac® tires that add a rugged, off-road appearance.

Noted truck cap and tonneau manufacturer Snugtop has taken capsule-style commercial toppers to the next level with the introduction of the lightweight SnugPro Capsule. It features an industry-first “drop in” design that snugly fits over the OEM wheel well and provides maximum interior room—as well as unparalleled mounting security.

SLP supercharger available for 2014-2016 GM trucks

Street Legal Performance (SLP) announced that it now has supercharger systems available for 2014-2016 Chevrolet Silverado and 2014-2016 GMC Sierra with 5.3 and 6.2-liter engines.
The SLP Supercharger System for 2014-16 GM trucks powered by a 6.2-liter V8 boosts performance of the direct injected high-compression platform to 590 horsepower.

“That’s an additional 170 horsepower at 5,700 rpm and 130 lb-ft of torque at 4,100 rpm, resulting in a tire-shredding 41 percent horsepower and 28 percent torque increase over stock,” SLP reports.

For 2014-16 GM trucks equipped with 5.3-liter V8, the SLP supercharger provides an additional 165 rear-wheel horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 167 lb-ft of torque at 3,200 rpm, with an end result of 520 horsepower and 550 lb-ft or torque. That equates to a 46 percent gain in horsepower and a 44 percent boost in torque over stock.

SLP’s supercharger systems for 2014-16 Chevrolet and GMC trucks are developed in-house by talented SLP engineers utilizing OEM CAD data to optimize available space for the best possible fitment and maximum performance.

Chevy Supercharger under hoodThe SLP 1900 supercharger system is part of the TVS (Twin Vortices Series) line of superchargers, utilizing Eaton’s TVS technology rotating assembly to deliver more power and better fuel economy in a smaller package. This is the same technology that has been used and proven for years in OEM high-performance applications such as the Cadillac CTS-V and Chevrolet Camaro ZL1.

The positive displacement supercharger features twin four-lobe rotors twisted 160-degrees. By comparison, the original Eaton supercharger rotating assembly featured three lobes twisted 60-degrees.

“The added benefits of this design include vastly cooler discharge temps than competitive twin screw designs, higher volumetric capacity, higher operating speeds, a smoother, more efficient flow of air into the engine, and improved noise and vibration characteristics,” SLP states.

“Instant throttle response and increased power through the engine’s entire power band is to be expected after installing the SLP 1900 TVS supercharger, giving it an instant advantage over the turbocharged competition.”
